Abstract

Several studies on medicinal plants in Halmahera have been conducted previously, but no research has yet been carried out on the communities living on the small islands around North Halmahera. The aim of this study is to identify the types of plants, the parts used, and the methods of processing traditional medicines among the people of Kakara Island, North Halmahera. The research employed a survey method, interviewing 18 identified key respondents, as well as collecting plant samples from the research site. The data collected included the types of plants, the parts utilized, and the methods of processing. Plant samples were then identified using the PlantNet identify application (https://identify.plantnet.org), and the results were presented descriptively in the form of tables, images, and graphs. The study found 47 types of plants from 25 families that are used by the people of Kakara Island, North Halmahera as ingredients for traditional medicine, with the most commonly used plant part being the leaf (59%), followed by bark (19%), fruit, rhizome (10%), and root. The methods of preparing medicines vary, such as pounding them to a fine consistency, squeezing until liquid is extracted, boiling, and applying coconut oil to the leaves. These findings not only contribute to the conservation ofvaluable traditional knowledge, but also highlight the great potential of Kakara Island’s flora as a source of bioactive compounds for future drug development.
